Young Warriors Defence Academy
Building Confidence • Teaching Safety • Creating Future Leaders
The Why Behind Our Mission
Young Warriors Defence Academy was founded by Lavinia Govender and Athi Dumezweni, who share a
common vision of empowering young people with the skills, confidence, and discipline needed to navigate life
safely and successfully.
Lavinia Govender is a qualified professional with extensive experience in the technology and finance sectors.
Her passion for boxing developed through her personal journey and was further strengthened when she
became a parent. Determined to equip her son with the knowledge, confidence, and life skills necessary to
achieve his goals and become the best version of himself, she became committed to creating opportunities
that would benefit young people more broadly.
Athi Dumezweni is an accomplished professional boxer with an impressive record of achievement, including
titles such as Africa Zone Champion, International Boxing Champion, and World Boxing Organisation
Champion, among others. He brings invaluable real-world experience in discipline, fitness, resilience, and self-
defence to the Academy, ensuring that learners receive high-quality training and mentorship. As the father of
two daughters, Athi understands the concerns that many parents have regarding their children's safety and
well-being.
Their shared commitment to youth development and personal safety inspired the establishment of Young
Warriors Defence Academy. The Academy was created to empower young people with practical self-defence
skills, strong values, and the confidence to make positive life choices.
Unlike traditional martial arts clubs, Young Warriors Defence Academy specialises in school-based
programmes specifically designed to complement educational environments. The Academy’s approach
focuses not only on physical self-defence but also on character development, anti-bullying awareness,
personal responsibility, and leadership.
The Academy’s mission is to help develop a generation of confident, disciplined, and responsible young people
who can protect themselves, make sound decisions, and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
